NBA makes unusual move with its Opening Night schedule

The NBA is trying something very different with its Opening Night schedule to kick off the 2026-27 season.

The league will open the regular season on October 20 with a triple-header. The first game of the three, which features the Detroit Pistons hosting the Boston Celtics, is set to start at 3 p.m. ET. Needless to say, that is a highly unusual start time for an NBA game on a weekday.

The 2026-27 NBA regular season will tip off on Tuesday, Oct. 20 with an NBC/Peacock tripleheader.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that the NBA and NBC are trying to capitalize on the high popularity of the league right now, and think this could become some sort of tradition. As an added bonus, the game will air in primetime in Europe, which has a growing market for the league.

“I’ve talked to people around the league today and they’re like, we could sense the excitement for the NBA right now. Let’s experiment with this thing,” McMenamin said. “They talked with executives at NBC, and it was kind of a joint decision that this is something we can turn into a celebration of the game. It’s already a marquee moment for the league. Let’s see if we can enhance it and turn it into a major showcase.

“Maybe down the line, this becomes a tradition for NBA fans. It’s not that abnormal to see sporting events during the daytime. Also an added bonus: it’s an international game. 3 p.m. Eastern is prime time viewing in Europe.”

Dave McMenamin on why the NBA scheduled a 3 PM game for Opening Night:

A weekday afternoon tipoff might be a bit too inconvenient to be truly embraced as a tradition by fans, but stranger things have happened. If the matchup is good enough, people will find a way to watch, and a Celtics-Pistons tipoff is certainly intriguing after the two finished first and second in the Eastern Conference last season.

While the game is interesting, the other two scheduled for Opening Night are definitely much bigger draws. That’s not a coincidence either, and shows this is still very much an experiment for the league.
