Nick Young pulls a Pondexter, tweets at Miss California USA Mabelynn Capeluj for a date
Nick Young saw what tweeting at a beauty queen did for Quincy Pondexter, so he decided to try his luck employing the same strategy.
Pondexter, a guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, was able to score a date with Miss Tennessee Chandler Lawson by hollering at her over Twitter this week.
During a guest appearance on ESPN’s “SportsNation” on Thursday, Young was asked whether Pondexter’s move was “desperate” or “smooth.”
“Smooth, smooth,” the Philadelphia 76ers guard insisted. “[The Memphis Grizzlies] just made it to the Western Conference finals. They’re on TV. He is the man right now. Gotta strike when you hot right there!”
Young, a Los Angeles native, then said he was going to try it out, too. He looked into the camera and said, “Miss California, holla at me!”
Young later went on Twitter to contact Miss California USA Mabelynn Capeluj and received a response:
@nickswagypyoung Hey! Just got into Vegas for Miss USA. & you?

Young was helped out by people watching “SportsNation” who had told Capeluj that the NBA player was asking her out on the show, so she was likely prepared for Young’s tweet.
One person who did take note of Young’s move was the original Twitter slickster, Quincy Pondexter:
Hahahahahaha just trying this new quincy dating game out RT @quincypondexter: @nickswagypyoung haha I see you bro

Here’s hoping Young and Capeluj do end up on a date. As for the strategy, Young is absolutely right: you have to strike while you’re hot. Michigan guard Spike Albrecht taught us all about that when he took the biggest chance of all last month.
As far as Young’s chances, sorry bro, but another NBA player may have you beat:
