An NBA franchise is officially heading to the open market.
The Portland Trail Blazers are being put up for sale, it was announced Tuesday. The team said in a statement that the estate of late owner Paul Allen has made it known that the franchise is on the market, with the process expected to extend into next season.
The statement adds that the Seattle Seahawks, also controlled by Allen’s estate, are not being put up for sale.

The Trail Blazers have been in flux since Allen’s death in 2018. His estate has been in control of the franchise since then, but the organization has seen little success. They last made the playoffs in 2021, and are coming off their fourth consecutive losing season.
Forbes valued the organization at $3.5 billion in 2024, putting them 24th among the 30 NBA franchises. The most recent franchise to be sold, the Boston Celtics, cost $6.1 billion, a record for a North American sports franchise.
It remains to be seen who gets involved in a possible Trail Blazers purchase. NBA franchises do not come available often, so interest is likely to be widespread despite the franchise’s recent struggles and relatively small market.
