Russell Westbrook posted a photo of cupcakes to his Instagram page on July 4 in what appeared to be an innocuous post. But it turns out the post was anything but that.
Lee Jenkins wrote a piece for Sports Illustrated about Westbrook that published on Wednesday. In that piece, he explains how Westbrook’s cupcake post was actually a shot at Kevin Durant for choosing to leave for the Warriors.
Here’s Jenkins explaining it:
Westbrook didn’t disparage Durant. He didn’t judge him. All he did was take a picture. When Kendrick Perkins played center for the Thunder, he called teammates “cupcake” if he thought they were acting a little soft. Westbrook and Durant adopted the term in jest. Westbrook posted a bittersweet pic on Instagram: three plates of cupcakes topped by red and blue stars and sprinkles.
