Russell Westbrook is struggling through a tough season with the Los Angeles Lakers in which he has been benched multiple times, but it would appear the veteran point guard is still making an effort to be a good teammate.
Westbrook gave an “impassioned speech” to his Lakers teammates prior to the All-Star break, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report. He stressed the importance of coming together down the stretch. It’s unclear how the speech was received, but the Lakers have lost all three of their games since the break.
Even if Westbrook still has the respect of his teammates, his relationship with the Lakers’ coaching staff seems to be tarnished beyond repair. Fischer reports that there is a “personality disconnect” between Westbrook and head coach Frank Vogel’s staff. The Lakers will likely explore a Westbrook trade this offseason, and the nine-time All-Star is said to be open to a divorce.
LeBron James’ agent was reportedly upset with the Lakers for failing to trade Westbrook for a certain star player prior to the deadline. You would think that would have a negative impact on LeBron’s relationship with Westbrook, but the goals of the two stars remain aligned.
Westbrook had another poor shooting night in Tuesday’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks. He made an honest comment about his play after the game. For now, all he can do is make the best of what has turned into a bad situation.
