Sacramento Kings make big firing immediately after losing play-in game

The Sacramento Kings lost their play-in tournament game on Wednesday night and wasted no time making a big change.

The Kings fell to the Dallas Mavericks 120-106 in their game at Golden 1 Center at Sacramento, Calif. The loss ended Sacramento’s season and ensured they would not make the playoffs.

Not long after the game ended, word got out that the team was parting ways with GM Monte McNair.

McNair had been the team’s general manager and president of basketball operations since the 2020-2021 season. He had even received a multi-year contract extension in January 2023. In May 2023, McNair was named the NBA’s Executive of the Year — the same year then-Kings coach Mike Brown won NBA Coach of the Year.

Despite being honored as coach of the year a year prior, the Kings fired Brown in December, so it’s not too surprising that they sent McNair packing as well five months later.

Sacramento lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Warriors in 2023. They reached the play-in tournament in both 2024 and 2025 but failed to secure either the 7th or 8th spot.
