Spencer Dinwiddie has been thinking creatively about different financial options for his next NBA contract, and he has arrived at an interesting new possibility.
Dinwiddie on Friday launched a GoFundMe fundraiser campaign. He is seeking 2625.8 bitcoin, which is presently worth over $24.6 million. If Dinwiddie reaches the goal, he will let fans choose his next NBA team. He says if they do not reach the intended monetary goal, the money will go to charity.
“I’m simply creating this GoFundMe as my commitment to my previous tweets. As of now 2625.8 BTC is roughly equivalent to $24,632,630 USD. If we hit the target then I will allow the fan base to determine my next team decision and sign a one year contract at that destination. If we do not hit the target goal then I will be donating 100% of this campaign to charity. Fan engagement comes in all shapes and sizes, lets have fun folks!” Dinwiddie says in the charity page description.
Most players are happy to sign for an agreed upon contractual amount and earn their pay, but Dinwiddie has been thinking outside the box for a while. He previously explored the possibility of using his contract as collateral for an investment vehicle, but the NBA rejected that. Now he has gone with the fundraiser.
Dinwiddie is signed with the Brooklyn Nets through next season and has a player option for 2021-2022. Raising money now would allow the 27-year-old guard to invest it for a year. It would also provide insurance in case the revenue pool for future seasons falls due to the economy.
