Timberwolves working on buyout for Anthony Bennett

Anthony Bennett

Former No. 1 overall draft pick Anthony Bennett may soon be looking for a new team.

Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Monday that the Timberwolves and Bennett are working on a buyout. Bennett would become a free agent if he clears waivers after being bought out.

There were trade rumors involving Bennett over the summer, so this news is not too surprising. After drafting Karl-Anthony Towns, acquiring Kevin Garnett, and given the emergence of Gorgui Dieng, the T-Wolves have less room in their front court for Bennett.

Bennett was a surprise No. 1 pick by the Cavaliers in 2013 and has been nothing short of a bust so far. He played just 12.8 minutes per game as a rookie in Cleveland, and he only averaged 15.7 minutes per game last season with Minnesota. He was so unproductive that his 19-point game as a rookie was his highlight.

Though Bennett did show improvement playing international ball for Team Canada over the summer, the T-Wolves apparently do not have enough reason to keep him on the roster, especially at his $5.8 million price tag.
