Tom Thibodeau the favorite for Knicks head coach with Leon Rose aboard?

One of basketball’s most well-known unemployed coaches could soon find himself back in the saddle.

Frank Isola of ESPN reported on Monday that former Coach of the Year Tom Thibodeau would be among the favorites for the New York Knicks job if a coaching change is made. Isola notes that Thibodeau has been close with new Knicks president Leon Rose for two decades.

The 62-year-old Thibodeau hasn’t coached since being fired by the Minnesota Timberwolves in Jan. of 2019. In addition to his ties to Rose from the latter’s time working as an agent for CAA, Thibodeau also served as an assistant coach for the Knicks from 1996 to 2004.

While there is no guarantee that the Knicks move on from interim coach Mike Miller, who has gone 15-24 since taking over for the fired David Fizdale, we have heard that Thibodeau has significant interest in the job. Whether he is the right coach for their young, rebuilding team is a different story though.
