Tracy McGrady on being elected to Hall of Fame: ‘This is my championship’
Tracy McGrady was never able to win a championship in his NBA career, but none of that matters to him now.
McGrady was voted into the Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday as a member of the Class of 2017, and he took some time to reflect on the honor.
“It doesn’t get any better than this,” said the seven-time All-Star, according to Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com. “You’re talking about going into a class of greatness. Legendary. This is forever. It doesn’t matter how many playoff games you lost. What you didn’t accomplish. None of that matters. It’s what I did do. What I did accomplish over my career. To be honored with this prestigious award is phenomenal.
“This is elite,” McGrady went on. “It doesn’t matter how many championships. Anybody can be a champion. But everybody can’t be in the Hall of Fame. This is it. This is my championship.”
The 37-year-old McGrady, who also made seven All-NBA teams and won two scoring titles, played in the NBA for 15 seasons, averaging 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game. One of the most dynamic offensive threats of his era, the induction is well-deserved for McGrady (who also had this great reaction to the news of his nomination back in December). Now all he needs to is focus on making sure his wardrobe is in order for the ceremony.
