Video: Russell Westbrook went over to confront fan over ‘Westbrick’ name

Russell Westbrook continues to Streisand-effect himself over the “Westbrick” nickname.

The Los Angeles Lakers guard got heckled by a opposing fan during warm-ups before Wednesday’s game against the Timberwolves in Minnesota. The fan jokingly said, “Westbrick, I’m your biggest fan! Westbrick!” That led to Westbrook walking up to the fan and repeatedly asking, “What did you call me?” Westbrook only left once he heard the fan finally say, “Westbrook.”

Here is the video, which was originally posted by TikTok user simba30k.

Westbrook has made clear that he sees the “Westbrick” moniker as an attack on his family name. But it is not an objectively offensive name and merely pokes fun at Westbrook’s tendency to brick shots on the basketball court.

Instead of simply ignoring it, Westbrook is giving the name infinitely more attention by showing that it gets under his skin. He is also living up to the “Westbrick” title in a lot of different ways, so there is no reason to expect fans to stop calling him that any time soon.
