Kyle Larson declared winner in closest finish in Cup Series history

NASCAR Cup Series finish between Kyle Larson and Chris Buescher during AdventHealth 400 at Kansas Speedway

Fans watching the AdventHealth 400 on Sunday were treated to a NASCAR Cup Series race finish for the ages.

Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson just barely edged out RFK Racing rival Chris Buescher by 0.001 seconds at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan. The insanely slim margin of victory was the closest finish in NASCAR Cup Series history.

Larson’s No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro and Buescher’s No. 17 Ford Mustang were neck-and-neck and even banged doors as they made it through the final turn. NASCAR’s high-speed cameras captured how unbelievably close the race was.

The gap between the two cars was so narrow that the scoring monitors at Kansas Speedway initially had Buescher as the winner. Both teams were seen celebrating as their respective drivers crossed the finish line.

Buescher’s team eventually accepted the final result without protest.

Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. finished third and fourth, respectively. Denny Hamlin, who had held the lead for a good chunk of the race, placed fifth.

The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series has featured some spectacular finishes this season — including another wild photo finish at earlier in the year.
