Ryan Newman taken to hospital after crash on final lap of Daytona 500
Ryan Newman was taken to the hospital in an ambulance on Monday after a crash near the finish line of the Daytona 500.
Newman was leading in the final lap and went towards the inside of the track near the finish. He got nudged by Team Penske Ford driver Ryan Blaney, spun out, and crashed into the wall, then flipped over multiple times.

Newman actually crossed the finish line with his car upside down and finished fourth. Flames had to be extinguished from his car before it was flipped over and he could be removed.
Newman was then taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
“We pushed Newman there to the lead and then we got a push from the 11 … I was committed to just pushing him to the win and having a Ford win it and got the bumpers hooked up wrong. It looked bad,” Blaney said.
The “11” is a reference to Denny Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
Hamlin ended up winning the race, beating Blaney by 0.014 seconds, the second-closest finish in Daytona 500 history.
We ask that out of respect for privacy that you please do not speculate on Ryan Newman’s condition until an official statement has been issued by @NASCAR, @FordPerformance, or @RoushFenway racing. Thank you.
