Video: Arizona State scores run after ball ends up in umpire’s pocket
Arizona State scored a run in its game against Fairfield on Sunday thanks to one of the most improbable plays you will ever see.
Sun Devils second baseman Sean McClain was batting with runners on second and third in the top of the sixth inning when a pitch from Fairfield’s Eli Oliphant got by the catcher. The ball hit the umpire in the chest protector and ended up in his front pocket. You have to see it to believe it:
Well…we have NEVER seen this before.
Devils get the go-ahead run on…this…
You have to see it to believe it. 7-6, Devils, M6.

The play was scored a wild pitch and the home plate umpire ruled that each runner got to advance one base. That gave Arizona State a 7-6 lead.
Fortunately, the home plate umpire did not get hurt. It wasn’t all that long ago that we saw a frightening situation at the MLB level when an ump was hit in the head with a ball.
We highly doubt you will ever see that again in a baseball game.
