Texas G Martez Walker suspended for allegedly punching girlfriend multiple times
Texas sophomore guard Martez Walker was suspended indefinitely by the team Friday after allegations emerged this week that he assaulted his girlfriend.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, Walker’s girlfriend told campus police that she was punched hard four times by the Longhorns basketball player after he became angry with her for going out to a happy hour with another guy.
Their alleged fight took place in a dorm room. The girlfriend said she slapped Walker because she was tired of his treatment, but then she got into the fetal position and protected her face because she knew from his past behavior that he would retaliate by hitting her. He did — four times on her left side — and then dragged her out of the room by her arms.
The girlfriend was taken to the hospital to be treated. Walker turned himself into police and was charged with a misdemeanor assault.
“We are aware of the situation with Martez and he is cooperating with campus police officials,” Texas coach Rick Barnes said in a statement. “We have consistently stressed to all of our student-athletes for a long time that any behavior in which women are not treated with respect will not be tolerated.”
Texas president Bill Powers issued a statement as well.
“Physical abuse and violence will not be tolerated at the University of Texas. We take this allegation extremely seriously. Coach Barnes has suspended the player from the team and the university has begun to take appropriate action to ensure the safety of our students, even as the investigation continues.”
Walker shot 39.4 percent and averaged 4.7 points per game last season.
