Villanova head coach Kevin Willard may need to work on his joke delivery before next year’s NCAA Tournament.
Willard ruffled some feathers when he seemed to throw the rest of his coaching staff under the bus as 8-seed Villanova found itself behind on Friday against 9-seed Utah State. During an in-game interview, Willard said that he was ready to “fire my staff” because of how poorly his team had defended the paint.
The Wildcats collapsed after holding a double-digit lead in the second half, losing to the Aggies in an 86-76 affair at Viejas Arena in San Diego, Calif.
Willard doubled down on the message during his postgame press conference, stating that he would “have to make some changes to my staff” after the team’s performance in March Madness. When a reporter pressed him on the “fire my staff” claim and the online backlash, Willard claimed it wasn’t as serious as many were making it seem.
“It’s a joke,” Willard said, interrupting the reporter. “I don’t care. Welcome to my life. It’s a joke.”

It’s hard to blame reporters and fans at home for not detecting the comedic tone from Willard’s voice. He didn’t exactly sound like Conan O’Brien hosting the Oscars when he claimed he would “fire my staff” so matter-of-factly.
Willard himself, however, probably won’t get fired anytime soon despite the first-round exit. He left Maryland to join Villanova last year and helped end the Wildcats’ three-year NCAA Tournament drought since Jay Wright retired in 2022. Wright himself took three years to lead Villanova to a March Madness appearance.
