Behind by 17 points against the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Auburn Tigers felt that they had to get creative on 4th and short to beat their Iron Bowl rivals. Unfortunately, that creativity may have been a little bit too much.
On 4th and 4, Auburn came out in the wildcat and ended up passing to kicker Anders Carlson, who ended up tackled short of the first down marker.

Alabama never seemed to be particularly fooled by the setup, and had Carlson wrapped up quickly. The Tigers weren’t wrong to go for it — they weren’t going to beat Alabama by kicking field goals — but this idea from the mind of Gus Malzahn simply didn’t quite work out.
