Alabama QB enters transfer portal, but with interesting twist
Alabama quarterback Tyler Buchner has entered the transfer portal, but with an interesting twist.
Buchner is entering the transfer portal as a lacrosse player.
Alabama QB Tyler Buchner has entered the transfer portal as a lacrosse athlete, @mzenitz and I have learned for @247Sports.
Buchner, who transferred to Alabama from Notre Dame this offseason, was once committed to Michigan in lacrosse. https://t.co/MPzN9rAvWk pic.twitter.com/D3z5JLgX7S

Buchner played lacrosse in addition to football and actually was committed to Michigan as a lacrosse player prior to high school. However, he later focused on football and decided to pursue that collegiately.
Buchner initially attended Notre Dame and saw some action in 2021 and 2022 for the Fighting Irish. But he transferred to Alabama to follow former Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, who became the Crimson Tide’s OC.
Buchner got one start at Alabama amid some early-season struggles for Jalen Milroe. Buchner played poorly and went just 5/14 for 34 yards in a 17-3 win over South Florida during Alabama’s third game of the season. Buchner also saw some action in the Tide’s season-opening win over Middle Tennessee and even ran for a touchdown in that game.
For his football career, Buchner has passed for 1,010 yards, 6 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. The San Diego native has rushed for 479 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Since Buchner has already transferred once, he would have to sit out a year before being eligible to play football at another school, unless he becomes a graduate transfer. Switching sports would ostensibly allow him to play lacrosse this spring.
A source close to Buchner said he's expected to explore his lacrosse options this spring. He was considered one of the top lacrosse recruits in the country while in high school. He hasn't ruled out a return to football, but is expected to explore lacrosse in the immediate future. https://t.co/A3MOVAMKhE
