Report: Bill O’Brien interested in Maryland coaching job

The 3-5 Houston Texans are still in the playoff hunt thanks to some horrible play in the AFC South this season, but their head coach is reportedly considering moving on after the season.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, Bill O’Brien is “very intrigued” by the University of Maryland coaching vacancy. Several high-ranking Maryland officials are reportedly aware of O’Brien’s interest, and it seems mutual at this point.

O’Brien, who served as Maryland’s running backs coach from 2003-2004, spent two seasons as the head coach at Penn State before taking the Houston job last year. The Texans are apparently planning some changes in their organizational power structure, and O’Brien is said to be unhappy about it. With the Texans falling short of expectations, the team might be happy to let O’Brien walk.

O’Brien has had an incredibly frustrating season, and that includes having to deal with one extremely immature quarterback. It would not be a surprise if the disappointing 2015 season takes its toll on him. That said, moving from an NFL team to Maryland would be a downgrade.
