Brian Kelly goes off on ‘spoiled’ reporter

LSU head coach Brian Kelly went off on a reporter following his team’s big win over SEC rival Florida on Saturday night.

The Tigers relied mostly on their defense while staving off several late comeback attempts in their 20-10 win at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. LSU intercepted Florida quarterback DJ Lagway five times, three of which came in the second half.

During his postgame press conference, Kelly became irate after Michael Cauble from local TV station WBRZ asked about LSU’s offensive struggles. The coach lambasted Cauble for being “spoiled” and asking “ridiculous questions.”

“I just laid it out for you. We played the game to win the game. We played the game to win the game. It’s one game,” Kelly said. “Last game we were great on third down. You’re looking at this from the wrong perspective. LSU won the football game. What do you want from me? You want us to win 70-0 against Florida to keep you happy?”

Cauble did not back down and said he was trying to gain some insight into why LSU was unable to run the ball effectively.

“We can run the ball. Did you see the last play of the game? That’s all you need. You just need one,” Kelly said. “These are ridiculous questions and I’m getting tired of it. That football team just worked their tail off to get an SEC win and you want to know what’s wrong. You know what? You’re spoiled. You’re spoiled. This team is 17-1 at night, 17-1. Give them some respect. How about that? Give them some respect instead of micro-analyzing every little thing. This is ridiculous. For a group of seasoned reporters, that kind of question is so out of line.”

The questions from Cauble were fair and nothing unusual. Kelly is right that winning is most important, but it is still fair to ask what went wrong for the Tigers offensively. LSU rushed for only 102 yards as a team, and 51 of those came on a run Caden Durham had with less than two minutes remaining to ice the game, as Kelly mentioned.

One of LSU’s second-half interceptions was a pick-six. Their offense found the end zone just once, with Garrett Nussmeieir going 15/27 for 220 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The Tigers will need to be better offensively some weeks, which is why the reporter wanted to know if Kelly has a plan for improving that area of the team. Kelly was just in no mood to hear it.
