Coach with best name in college football has been fired
You can pour one out for Biff Poggi’s tenure at Charlotte.
Poggi, who has the best name of any head coach in college football, has been fired. Poggi was let go Monday by Charlotte amid a 3-7 season. Poggi went 3-9 last season, which was his first as the 49ers’ head coach.
Poggi, 64, had worked on Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan staff in 2016 and 2021-2022. His second stint with Michigan enabled him to receive interest from other programs and led to his hiring by Charlotte.
This was Poggi’s first head coaching job in college.
Charlotte has lost four games in a row and has two games remaining on its schedule. Their next game is against FAU, which also just fired its coach. The schools may be firing their coaches now so they can get a start on finding replacements.
Charlotte may have also felt comfortable firing Poggi due to the experience level of their coaches on staff. Tim Brewster will take over as the interim head coach for the 49ers. Brewster was the head coach at Minnesota from 2007-2010.
