Colorado State head coach Jim Mora made a coaching change in the heat of the moment Saturday in a dispiriting loss to Oregon State.
Tyson Summers was the Rams’ defensive coordinator and play-caller during kickoff at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, Colo. He surrendered both roles even before the teams left the field for halftime.
Mora relieved Summers of his play-calling duties midway through the first quarter. Assistant head coach Kenny McClendon donned the headset in Summers’ place. Summers then walked off the field in frustration and did not return, ending his tenure on Mora’s coaching staff.
“Tyson was relieved of his play-calling duties,” Mora told reporters after the game. “He left the field and is no longer with this football program.”
The in-game switch in the first quarter did little to bolster Colorado State’s defense. Oregon State scored 14 points in the first period and exceeded that with 21 more before the break. The Beavers poured in three more touchdowns in the second half to secure a 56-26 win.
Summers entered Saturday’s game already on thin ice, as the Rams allowed 100 points combined in their previous two contests. Colorado State unsurprisingly lost both of those contests.
The firing marked an early low point in Mora’s first year as head coach of Colorado State. The Rams won their first two games of the season before suffering three straight multi-score losses.
