Jarren Williams beats out Tate Martell, N’Kosi Perry for Miami starting QB job
Miami redshirt freshman quarterback Jarren Williams was given a chance for a fresh start with the program this offseason under new head coach Manny Diaz, and he has apparently made the most of it.
Williams has been named Miami’s starting quarterback for their season opener against Florida, beating out N’Kosi Perry and Ohio State transfer Tate Martell.

That’s a big leap for Williams, who was suspended at one point last season for a violation of team rules. He remained buried on the depth chart behind Perry and Malik Rosier, and he was not considered the favorite to earn the starting job heading into 2019.
Martell was one of the biggest names to transfer following the 2018 season, and he received an eligibility waiver to be able to play immediately. The highly-touted recruit redshirted his freshman year at Ohio State and then served as Dwayne Haskins’ backup last year, and he felt the Hurricanes could offer him a good chance to earn a starting job. His play obviously has not backed that up.
