FIU TE Jonnu Smith out for season after girlfriend threw boiling water on him

Florida International tight end Jonnu Smith has played his last snap of college football because of an argument with his girlfriend that turned violent.

Smith, FIU’s best NFL Draft prospect, suffered severe burns on his head, neck, back, shoulder and arm on Halloween when his girlfriend Mary Gaspar threw a pot of boiling water at him. Gaspar, who is five months pregnant with Smith’s child, has been charged with aggravated battery.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Miami Herald, Gaspar told FIU police that she and Smith had been arguing throughout the day over the lack of attention he was giving her. Gaspar admitted to boiling a pot of water and pouring it over Smith after she had been sitting in his dorm room “feeling extremely emotional and stressed.” Gaspar also said she hit Smith with her open hands after he did not react as strongly as she would have liked.

Smith has 39 catches for 441 yards and three touchdowns this season. In 2014, he led all tight ends in the nation with 61 catches, 710 receiving yards and eight scores. He was projected as a late-round pick or undrafted free agent signing, so it remains to be seen if missing the remainder of his senior season will hurt his draft stock.

We’ve told you about numerous weird injuries (see them here) over the years, but Smith’s season coming to an end like that is as disturbing as it gets. Here’s hoping he heals quickly.
