Report: JT Daniels will not transfer from USC, intends to compete with Kedon Slovis
The USC Trojans may have a big quarterback battle on their hands next year.
JT Daniels does not intend to transfer from USC despite the emergence of true freshman Kedon Slovis, Daniels’ father says.
Daniels’ father Steve spoke with 247 Sports’ Greg Biggins and told the reporter that his son is committed to USC and plans to compete with Slovis for the starting quarterback job.
“JT is definitely staying,” Daniels’ father Steve told 247Sports. “He’s happy for Clay (Helton) and has a great relationship with him but to be honest, no matter what happened with the coaching situation, JT was going to stay and compete. He loves it at SC, he has an SC tattoo on his leg so he’s pretty committed to the program.
“He’s a very competitive kid and has never run from a challenge before. Kedon played really well and JT was happy for him but at the same time, JT is a competitor and once he’s back to 100%, he wants to compete for that job.”
Daniels suffered a season-ending knee injury during the Trojans’ first game of the season. Slovis, a true freshman, entered the game in his place and has played well ever since, raising questions about whether Daniels would be able to reclaim his starting job upon returning from a torn ACL.
Daniels, who started last season as a true freshman, threw for 215 yards, a touchdown and an interception prior to his injury. Slovis has passed for 3,242 yards, 28 touchdowns and nine interceptions this season. If Daniels ever did decide to transfer, plenty of programs would welcome him.
