Ken Niumatalolo to visit with BYU about coaching job

Ken Niumatalolo

BYU needs a new football coach, and one person they have targeted as a candidate is Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo. Niumatalolo sounds very interested in the position.

The Capital Gazette reports that Niumatalolo will meet with BYU officials and tour the school’s facilities on Monday.

“Kenny is doing his due diligence. He feels strongly that he needs to hear what BYU has to say,” Niumatalolo’s agent Evan Beard told The Gazette.

Niumatalolo has been at Navy for eight seasons and is their most successful coach ever. He took over from Paul Johnson at the end of the 2007 season and has produced a winning season seven of eight tries. He has taken the team to seven bowl games as well.

Perhaps the factor that makes Niumatalolo such an attractive candidate for the job besides his success at Navy is his religion. Niumatalolo is a third-generation Mormon and has good standing within the church, which is a necessity for the job. He went on a mission during college, and he has a son who already plays for BYU.

It’s not hard to envision Niumatalolo taking the job at some point after the Midshipmen’s rivalry game against Army.
