Applewhite is currently the team’s offensive coordinator, while Orlando has been serving as the defensive coordinator and was just promoted to interim head coach.
Applewhite, a former Texas quarterback and assistant coach, came to Houston last year with Herman. At 38, he would be a young head coach if promoted.
Orlando was the defensive coordinator at Utah State prior to coming to Houston to serve under Herman beginning last year.
The Cougars are 9-3 this season and entered the week averaging 38 points per game, good for 20th in the nation. Defensively they were allowing 22.6 points per game, which is 32nd in the country. Herman has gone 22-4 in his two seasons at Houston but news came out Saturday that he is taking the Texas job.
