Michigan fans had their prayers answered by the football gods Saturday against Western Michigan.
Michigan trailed 12-7 with a second left in a contest that already had the critics circling, ready to crucify the Wolverines. Quarterback Bryce Underwood, who had looked disappointing for almost the entirety of the 59 minutes and 59 seconds leading up to the final play of the game, uncorked a Hail Mary pass that had the crowd erupting inside Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Underwood dropped back to Michigan’s own 40-yard line and unleashed a long-distance throw that somehow found wide receiver JJ Buchanan in the end zone.

Underwood finished 12/22 for 170 yards with a touchdown and an interception. A good chunk of that production came in Michigan’s final drive, as the sophomore completed two passes for 75 yards and the game-winning touchdown, sealing the 13-12 victory.
While Michigan ended Saturday all smiles, the Wolverines still needed a gridiron miracle to get past a Western Michigan team that has never beaten an AP top-20 program in its history.
Michigan will get a chance to prove itself next week when No. 10 Oklahoma visits Ann Arbor.
