Mike Gundy tried to trademark ‘I’m a man, I’m 40!’
If Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy had a nickel for every time he heard the phrase “I’m a man, I’m 40!” he’d be a lot more wealthy than he is now.
During an interview with The Seth Davis Show for Campus Insiders recently, Gundy was asked how often he has his infamous rant thrown back in his face. Believe it or not, Gundy said he only has the phrase shouted at him a few times a year now, though he admitted that he hears it more often during the season. And at one point, he even tried to profit off of its popularity.
Gundy told Davis that he tried to trademark “I’m a man, I’m 40!” but someone else beat him to it.
“I tried to and somebody else got it before that,” he said. “I thought about it.”
Either Gundy was joking, or he should probably hire a lawyer. You could make a fairly easy case that anyone who is profiting off of that phrase is profiting off Gundy’s likeness, which is illegal.
As for who Gundy has to hear the phrase from the most, you might be surprised to learn that it’s not opposing fans. His own son loves it.
“My 12-year-old son, he has it memorized,” Gundy said. “He can do it and sometimes I’ll catch him doing it in the family room with his buddies in there. He can do it just to a T. So I actually hear it more there than I do anywhere else.”
Hey, at least the rant has helped Gundy land players. He can’t say he regrets it completely.
