Mike Elko has his Texas A&M Aggies in a good spot, and he knows it.
Texas A&M beat LSU 38-23 at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, on Saturday night. The Aggies are now 7-1 and 5-0 in SEC play, all in Elko’s first year on the job.
After his Aggies got the big win to take over first place in the SEC West, Elko talked conidently in his postgame news conference. He firmly stated that Texas A&M means business. He also seemed to take a shot at previous Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher with his remarks.

“This is a real program. It’s not fake. It’s not a politician running this program, talking fast and BSing everybody. This is a real program and for all the recruits out there, this is a real place,” Elko said.
It’s unclear if Elko was just speaking generally about the way some coaches are politicians who BS people, or if he was talking about his predecessor, Fisher, who is known for literally talking fast.
Many people, of course, interpreted it as a shot at Fisher.
With the exception of his 9-1 season in 2020, Fisher largely underachieved at Texas A&M, which is why he was fired and bought out of his massive contract last year. Elko may not be a big name, but he’s already putting together big results, which is exactly what the Aggies want.
