Virginia did not have an official spring game this year, and one of the big reasons is the team’s lack of depth on the defensive line.
The Cavaliers announced on Friday that two defensive linemen are retiring from football due to medical reasons. That leaves them with just five (FIVE!) defensive linemen.
John Kirven and James Trucilla both are retiring, which takes away two linemen. Virginia lost another last season due to a suspension, one to a transfer, and another was taken in the draft. That’s left them especially thin at the position.
But as Sam Blum of Cavaliers Insider noted, the team is getting three incoming freshmen for the fall as well as a graduate transfer. Even with the additions, you’re talking about having some true freshmen play, which probably isn’t ideal.
