Former MLB All-Star goes viral over his attire at Kentucky Derby

Jayson Werth certainly has not lost his sense of fashion.

The former MLB All-Star Werth was present at Saturday’s annual Kentucky Derby held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Werth is the owner of the horse Flying Mohawk, who was racing in the day’s main event.

NBC Sports caught up for a brief interview with Werth, who was all dressed up in a stylish black-and-neon suit-and-tie combo, complete with a matching top hat as well. Take a look below.

Now 45 years old, Werth played in Major League Baseball from 2002-17 (a total of 15 seasons). Primarily serving as a right fielder, Werth won a World Series title with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008 and then went on to make an All-Star team with them in 2009. Werth ultimately finished out his career with the Washington Nationals and was inducted into the Nationals Ring of Honor in 2018.

With it being nearly a decade now since Werth retired from professional baseball, he is enjoying a successful second act as a horse owner. Werth founded the stable Two Eight Racing (named after his old No. 28 jersey during his MLB days) and already had a horse named Dornoch racing in last year’s Kentucky Derby.

While Dornoch ended up only finishing 10th in the 2024 Derby, the horse did win the 2024 Preakness Stakes held the next month (with Werth going viral at the time over his elated reaction in the stands). Now Werth will be getting to try his luck again in the 2025 Derby with Flying Mohawk, another horse in his Two Eight Racing stable.
