49ers reportedly agreed to trade NaVorro Bowman to Saints before release

NaVorro Bowman

The San Francisco 49ers tried to trade NaVorro Bowman before releasing the veteran linebacker, and they were apparently able to work out an agreement with at least one team.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Niners agreed to trade Bowman to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a seventh-round pick. However, Bowman informed the team that he would prefer if he could become a free agent and choose his next destination. The 49ers reportedly decided to grant him his wish as a reward for the 29-year-old’s six-plus excellent seasons with the team.

Bowman likely wants to sign with a contender, and contending teams that are in need of linebacker help include the Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that there is “strong mutual interest” between Bowman and the Raiders.

Bowman could be the first of several major changes to come in San Francisco, as there have been rumblings that they are looking to trade another star player. The 49ers are still in search of their first win of 2017, but they’ll have to beat the Redskins on the road if they want to get it in Week 6.
