49ers defense figured out Rams’ route trees

Jeff Fisher Rams

The Los Angeles Rams threw up an absolute stinkbomb against the 49ers on Monday night, losing 28-0. Their offense was a disaster as they only passed for 130 yards and rushed for just 65 yards.

It was pretty clear by the results that San Francisco’s defense just owned the Rams, but was that due to a difference in personnel, scheme or coaching? Certainly the Rams’ quarterback situation leaves a lot to be desired, but their coaching apparently failed them with the schemes as well.

During a TV appearance, NFL Media’s Steve Wyche said a 49ers defender told him they had figured out the Rams’ offense.

“I had a 49ers player tell me when it came to the passing game for the Rams, they could tell by alignment and backfield motion after the snap, exactly what the Rams’ route tree was,” Wyche said.

It’s only Week 1 and the Rams’ offensive code has already been cracked? That’s not good. Maybe the Rams take a cue from this and start thinking about whether they want to keep Jeff Fisher around long term.
