49ers starting center Weston Richburg out for season with knee injury

The San Francisco 49ers saw some of their key players go down with injuries during Sunday’s thrilling win over the New Orleans Saints, and the one starting center Weston Richburg suffered is unfortunately very serious.

Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Monday that Richburg suffered a torn patellar tendon and will miss the remainder of the season

That is a huge blow for the 49ers, as Richburg had started all 13 games for them at center this year after making 15 starts last season. He’s a big reason why San Francisco has gotten such stellar offensive line play this year and ranks second in the NFL with 149.1 passing yards per game.

Shanahan also confirmed that Richard Sherman has a hamstring strain and will miss a couple of weeks.

The Niners beat the Saints 48-46 on Sunday thanks in part to a crucial penalty late in the game, and they solidified their spot at the top of the NFC in the process. Their depth will now be tested down the stretch with Richburg out.
