Aldon Smith’s once-promising NFL career was completely derailed due to his inability to stay sober, and the former San Francisco 49ers star appears to still be struggling with his addiction.
KCTV News 5 in Kansas reported on Tuesday that Smith was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence this week. He was pulled over at around midnight Monday night for a routine traffic stop, and police suspected he had been drinking.
Smith was likely still on probation at the time of his most recent arrest. He was also arrested a little over a year ago for having a dangerously highly blood-alcohol content while wearing a court-issued monitoring device.

More recently, Smith was convicted in a domestic violence case last November but avoided jail time. He reached a plea agreement with prosecutors after facing charges of domestic violence, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism stemming from an incident in which he assaulted his then-fiancee. He was sentenced to three years of probation as part of the agreement, so his arrest this week will likely be a violation.
Smith, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, played for the Oakland Raiders in addition to the 49ers. The sky was the limit for him from a talent standpoint, but he has been in trouble with the law numerous times and struggled with alcohol addiction.
