Alex Smith’s wife shares heartfelt message thanking Redskins, fans

Alex Smith was finally released from the hospital over the weekend after dealing with infections in his surgically repaired leg, and the quarterback’s wife took to social media on Sunday to thank fans and the Washington Redskins organization for their support.

Smith’s family had previously asked for privacy while he was recovering, but his wife said in an Instagram post that the past several weeks have been a “difficult ride.”

HOME…This last month has been a difficult ride. Our family is beyond happy to have this man with us and home. This experience has given us great perspective and gratitude for all the people and blessings in our lives. We couldn’t have gotten through it without our amazing family, friends and community. A special thank you to the relentless doctors, nurses, techs, hospital administrators, the Snyder family and the Washington Redskins.

Smith suffered a gruesome compound fracture in his leg during a loss to the Houston Texans last month, and he is facing a lengthy rehab. He dealt with infections that complicated his recovery and led to questions about whether he would ever play in the NFL again, but the latest report sounded more optimistic.

The Redskins signed Smith to a multi-year deal last offseason that includes $71 million guaranteed, so they are hoping he can make a full recovery and continue to be their starting quarterback going forward.
