One would not expect Patrick Mahomes needs to make big changes to his playing style the way his career has gone, but Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid is getting on him about one significant thing.

Mahomes admitted Thursday that Reid is nudging him to push the ball downfield more frequently, and that the coach gets on him when he takes a safer option.

“If I don’t, he throws little jabs at me like, ‘Oh, you want to throw the checkdown here?'” Mahomes said, via Adam Teicher of ESPN. “I’m like, ‘I got you, Coach; we’re going to push it.’ It has been fun.”

One would not expect that Mahomes would be told to guard against being too conservative with the ball. In the past, he has usually been the one pushing for a more aggressive approach. However, the Chiefs have always had speedy wide receivers twho can accumulate yards after the catch, so perhaps this does represent a meaningful change in approach.

The Chiefs will be looking for a third consecutive Super Bowl title in 2024. It stands to reason that they might have to change some things up, or at least add a few wrinkles, to get a three-peat.
