Brock Purdy appears to have taken one step forward and two steps back.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Purdy was ruled out for his team’s game this week on “Thursday Night Football” against the Los Angeles Rams. After missing two weeks of action due to a turf toe injury, Purdy returned under center in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars but had to sit out again this week.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Purdy suffered a “setback” with his toe injury during Week 4 against Jacksonville, having gotten hit in the same way. An MRI is said to have revealed an “aggravation” to the toe injury, and now Purdy is considered to be week-to-week (with the potentially to miss further games beyond Week 5).
With Purdy out, 49ers backup quarterback Mac Jones drew another start on Thursday against the Rams. It sounds like that could be the case for future games too, starting with Week 6 on the road versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
San Francisco has gone a stellar 3-1 to this point of the season, but they have gotten absolutely wrecked by injuries. Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ankle, rib) also missed Thursday’s game along with longer-term 49ers absentees George Kittle (hamstring) and Brandon Aiyuk (knee). That is not even to say anything of the torn ACL that star pass rusher Nick Bosa suffered in Week 3.
As for Purdy, he initially hurt his toe in Week 2, and the early word on his injury was already plenty troubling. Now it appears that Purdy, who was missing his third game of the season on Thursday, may be looking at an even longer spell on the sidelines with this latest aggravation.
