Bill Belichick could assume Patriots’ defensive coordinator duties
Thursday’s surprising news that Greg Schiano was stepping down as the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator seemingly has left the team in a hole and led to questions about who will fill the role. At least initially, there is some speculation that Bill Belichick will pull double-duty for the Patriots.
Both WEEI’s Ryan Hannable and The Athletic’s Jeff Howe speculated that since it’s so late in the offseason, Belichick may end up serving as defensive coordinator.
Given the time of year/what is currently left on staff, wouldn't be surprised if Bill Belichick assumes role of DC in addition to HC.

Seems possible Bill Belichick could be the Patriots defensive coordinator in 2019. I think that’d be a good thing. https://t.co/B3nWGa4L8p

The Patriots went through last season without actually having an official defensive coordinator since Matt Patricia left for the Lions. Brian Flores called defensive plays last season, though he did not have the actual DC title.
Belichick has always been a defensive-oriented coach and is often credited for coming up with gameplans to help stop opponents. Though this would be an extra load on his plate, he might take it on if he does not feel there is a suitable candidate available.
