Bill Belichick rarely chews players out?

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady made one of the most boneheaded throws of his career near the end of the second half on Sunday night, and he is lucky it didn’t end up costing his team a win.

Brady’s interception, which came on 3rd and 1 from his own 18-yard line, allowed the Indianapolis Colts to cut New England’s lead to 14-10 before the half. Here’s the play:

Bill Belichick had to have been left scratching his head like the rest of us, but he didn’t say much to Brady. According to the veteran quarterback, Belichick rarely chews out him or anyone else on the team.

“It’s been a while,” Brady said on his weekly WEEI appearance, via Karen Guregian of The Boston Herald. “Contrary to the way it may look, he doesn’t chew people out very often.”

Contrary to popular belief, most guys love playing for Belichick. He may be salty with the media, but he is a different guy behind closed doors. There have been several clips from Patriots practices where he is shown joking around and having a good time with his players.

And besides, no one was more angry about Brady’s interception than Brady. The two-time Super Bowl MVP is the definition of a perfectionist.

“We know when we make a mistake and make a dumb play and you know you have to get back out there and redeem yourself,” Brady said. “You really don’t want to let one bad play lead to two and then two leads to another and you have a bad game. You just want to try, if you are going to make them and we all make them, you have to try to rectify it, to play well, play with a heightened sense of awareness out there and not make any more mistakes.”

Belichick holds his players accountable, but he doesn’t treat them like children. If he did, he wouldn’t have found this much success during his coaching career.
