Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey missed practice Wednesday for a highly unusual reason, and it might not be the last time for him, either.
Aubrey was listed on the Cowboys’ injury report Wednesday, but the kicker is not hurt. He was given the DNP tag for “other” reasons — namely a summons for jury duty.

According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Aubrey was actually selected for a jury trial. That should not impact his availability for games, but depending on the trial schedule, he might have to miss a few more practices.

Believe it or not, there is some precedent for this, though the other example the Cowboys can point to took place during the offseason. The team does have to travel to face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 8, but the court is presumably aware of Aubrey’s career obligations.
Aubrey has blossomed into one of the NFL’s most reliable kickers. So far this season, he has made 17/19 field goal attempts, including a 65-yarder in Week 3 against Baltimore. There are indications that he could even hit from further away, too.
