The New Orleans Saints have added a former NFL head coach to their coaching staff for 2025.

Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley has agreed to take over as defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The move reunites Staley with new Saints head coach Kellen Moore, as they worked together with the Chargers.

The #Saints are hiring former #Chargers coach Brandon Staley as the defensive coordinator for coach Kellen Moore, per The Insiders.

Staley spent last season as an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers. Prior to that, he was the Chargers’ head coach for three seasons, where he posted a 24-24 record.

Staley had been heavily linked to the Saints job once it became clear that Moore would be named the team’s new head coach. Staley had previously hired Moore as his offensive coordinator in Los Angeles, and the two appear to have a solid working relationship.

Despite his underwhelming record with the Chargers, the 42-year-old still has a solid reputation around the NFL. He won a lot of plaudits for his work as Rams defensive coordinator before landing the Chargers job.

There were some indications that perhaps Staley was not cut out to lead a team, at least in his first head coaching stint. A defensive coordinator job might be right up his alley, and could be his pathway to another head coaching gig in the future.
