Broncos had one of the most ridiculous 4th quarter comebacks in NFL history

The Denver Broncos’ offense was MIA across the first three quarters of their Week 7 matchup against the New York Giants. It was apparently waiting for the final period to make history.

The Broncos entered the fourth quarter on Sunday behind 19-0 in front of an anxious crowd at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colo. Up to that point, the home team’s drives had consisted of six punts and one turnover on downs.

Then the fourth quarter began. The two teams traded touchdowns to start the period, which didn’t bode well for the Broncos’ comeback chances, trailing 26-8 with under six minutes left. Denver quarterback Bo Nix rushed in a TD and completed a second consecutive two-point conversion to trim the lead to 26-16 with 5:13 left in the contest.

The game took a turn when Giants QB Jaxson Dart threw an interception one series later, allowing the Broncos to score another touchdown to cut the deficit to 26-23.

After forcing a three-and-out, the Broncos took a 30-26 lead courtesy of a Bo Nix 18-yard run that had announcer Kevin Harlan losing his voice.

The Giants were able to answer with a touchdown of their own with 37 seconds left. But New York backup kicker Jude McAtamney missed the extra point, which allowed Denver to win the game on a field goal. The Giants kicker had a complete meltdown during the contest, missing two extra points in a game they lost 33-32.

Broncos kicker Will Lutz showed McAtamney how it was done with a game-winning 39-yard field goal in the closing seconds.

The Broncos trailed 19-0 after three quarters and gave up two touchdowns in the fourth. But Denver scored 33 points (!!) of their own in the last 15 minutes to steal a win in front of their stunned home crowd.

Denver’s 33 points were the most scored by a team shut out of the first three quarters in NFL history. Nix threw 27/50 for 279 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 48 yards and two touchdowns on five carries in what was potentially the regular season game of the decade.
