The Cleveland Browns say their interest in Colin Kaepernick was overblown by the media and that they are moving forward with potentially signing Robert Griffin III.
Browns executives Sashi Brown and Paul DePodesta and new head coach Hue Jackson met with the media at the NFL Annual Meeting Monday morning and answered some questions.
According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns said they are moving forward with potentially signing free agent QB Robert Griffin III, though she says the team indicated nothing was imminent. They also reportedly said the team’s supposed interest in Kaepernick was overblown by the media.
It had been reported that the Browns were interested in the 49ers QB and that Kaepernick was interested in them, but they say they were called to see if they had any interest in him. They also say no draft pick compensation in a potential trade was discussed, making it seem like the reports were driven by Kaepernick’s agents.
The Browns also said they had no comment on wide receiver Josh Gordon hanging out with Johnny Manziel since Gordon is not currently part of the team. He is awaiting reinstatement from the league. The line of questioning related to this photo of Manziel and Gordon together.
Lastly, the Browns said they have no plans to trade 9-time Pro Bowl OT Joe Thomas, who has been with the team since being drafted third overall in 2007.
