Even Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken cannot believe what has just transpired with supposed-to-be-rookie tight end Dae’Quan Wright.
Wright made history earlier this week when he became the first player to enter the NCAA transfer portal while under contract with an NFL team. The Ole Miss alum was among several former college players granted another year of eligibility by a recent court ruling.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that the Browns decided to waive Wright, paving the way for him to join LSU once he clears waivers.
Monken was asked about the historic development on Saturday, before reports about Wright’s move to Baton Rouge became definitive.
“Man, isn’t this s–t crazy?” Monken told reporters. “I mean, I don’t even know what to say.
“I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached out to me a week ago. Now I know. I didn’t call him back. I guess I should have.”
Monken added that Wright has been dealing with a “medical issue” that had kept him out of Cleveland’s first preseason game against the Chicago Bears last week. Wright was cleared and dressed for the Browns’ game Saturday against the Buffalo Bills but did not take the field.
Wright, who went undrafted in April, began training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles before being waived and ending up with the Browns.
Instead of preparing for his first NFL season, Wright heads back to college to reunite with first-year LSU coach Lane Kiffin. Wright played for Kiffin in the 2024 and 2025 seasons at Ole Miss.
