Cam Newton’s NFL future is up in the air, and it seems that it could stay that way for a while.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Newton wants to start, and could be willing to wait for a training camp injury for a job to open up so he can sign.
“Cam wants to be a starter — at least the chance to compete for a starting quarterback job,” Rapoport said on “The Rich Eisen Show.” “I don’t see one out there right now. So my sense is Cam is gonna wait until there is one. He’s got money obviously, it’s not like he needs it. I would not be surprised to see Cam waiting and it’s August and there is a quarterback injury and there is Cam available.”
We know Newton is willing to wait to sign, but this is even longer than previously thought. As long as Newton has some money saved up, this makes sense. It’s understandable that he wouldn’t want to wait for a backup role, but this is a rather risky proposition if nobody actually gets hurt.
