Cardinals giving Kyler Murray freedom to audible as rookie

Kyler Murray

Kyler Murray will have more power next season than rookie QBs usually do.

Speaking with the media this weekend, Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury said that the No. 1 overall pick would have the freedom to audible at the line of scrimmage during his first year.

“He has a lot of control at the line of scrimmage, to see what he sees and attack,” said Kingsbury, per Kyle Odegard of the team’s website. “We want him to play aggressively, and take advantage of matchups, leverage and different things he sees.”

Odegard notes that quarterbacks usually stick to the script as rookies since offensive play-callers generally have a better plan against NFL defenses but adds that Kingsbury’s offense will be similar to what Murray ran at Oklahoma.

Kingsbury was gushing over the Heisman winner well before he was drafted, so it seems that Murray will have his head coach’s full trust to run and tweak the offense as he sees fit in his rookie year.
