ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the decision was made after Mathieu refused to take a pay cut.

We had heard rumors of this at the start of the month, and the Cardinals have opted to make the move with Mathieu due a $5 million roster bonus on Friday.
Mathieu should have a robust market. The safety is only 25 and had 74 combined tackles, seven passes defended, and two interceptions last season. His skill and versatility will make him an attractive proposition on the open market.
