Chargers not a realistic option for Tom Brady?

Tom Brady

The Los Angeles Chargers have been mentioned as a natural fit for Tom Brady for quite some time, and that buzz only increased after they formally parted ways with Philip Rivers. Brady has family in California and seems to embrace the Hollywood lifestyle more and more each year, but are those reasons enough to convince him to pack his bags for LA?

With the official start of free agency now three weeks away, there seems to be a growing sense that Brady signing with the Chargers is not a realistic possibility. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington said recently that he believes the New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders are the three teams with the best chance of signing Brady. Darlington’s colleague, Adam Schefter, then told “The Rich Eisen Show” this week that the Titans are a legitimate option, and Schefter said Darlington is “more connected to (the Brady situation) than a lot of people realize.”

Mike Lombardi of The Athletic also seems to be discounting the Chargers. Lombardi, who worked as an assistant to Bill Belichick’s coaching staff from 2014-2016, said on his “The GM Shuffle” podcast that he believes the Titans and Raiders are the only two threats to sign Brady away from the Patriots.

Of course, there has been conflicting information about Brady’s future for months now. One recent report claimed the Patriots believe Brady will either re-sign with them or go to the Chargers, so no one really knows what the six-time Super Bowl champion is going to do. It’s possible that even Brady doesn’t know at this point, as Brady’s camp has yet to really talk about a new contract with the Patriots.

One other coach openly admitted this week that he is planning to pursue Brady, so a lot can happen between now and the start of free agency. But if Chargers fans are hoping Brady will help deliver them a long-awaited championship in their first season in a new stadium next year, they may end up very disappointed.
